Invention

One of the challenges I had growing up was finding music my parents and I could agree on. We didn’t share a lot of common ground so it was always a challenge to find something to put on in the background during dinner or when we were all in the living room together. Some form of Jazz was the easiest route to approval of a selection and I spent a lot of time trying to find the sweet spot of traditional and modern sounds. My folks were very enamored of the “Smooth Jazz” radio station in town but it often made me want to slam my head on the table numerous times. The almost muzaked versions of great tunes like “Take Five” or “Bumpin’” seemed like cruel revenge by music directors who had been victimized by jazzbo types in their youth.

I spent years trying to find modern bands that my parents and I could both stomach and never had a ton of luck save for Flim & The BB’s. Even then it was really only the album New Pants that hit the sweet spot. The improvisational style of the band satisfied my goal of slightly challenging music and the sax and keyboard sounds didn’t make waves at the dinner table. In retrospect I’d love to hear these songs done without the very 80’s sounding keyboard effects. I have a feeling they’d have aged much better.
