Some people like to call me Chuck

I had the good fortune to recently see the Eels in concert a week ago. One of the great aspects of the Eels touring is that E (Mark Everett, the man behind the Eels) changes the configuration of his live band with each new tour. He’s taken out a standard four-piece band, a mini-orchestra and a rocking three-piece band… accompanied by a dancing security guard. The current configuration of the touring band is now two men - E and The Chet playing multiple instruments and telling stories to the audience. (It was also something of a reunion for me because I ran into an old friend who is E’s tour manager.)

One of the highlights of the show was watching E and The Chet start a song off on piano and drums only to have them switch back and forth. E finished a piano part, scratched his beard as if in thought and then wandered over to slide into the drum kit behind The Chet without the skipping a beat. The Chet then took over on the piano for a few bars only to get the same look on his face and take his place at the drum kit back for a rousing finish. Humorously enough now I’m not 100% certain what song it was - I was positive it was “The Sound of Fear” but the person who went with me had thought it was “Flyswatter.” I’ll have to put an email into the tour manager to confirm but I like “The Sound of Fear” better than “Flyswatter” so from Daisies of the Galaxy here it is.
