And when you speak, I still hear the fire
I first heard this track on a mix tape a friend made for me right around 1990. She was in Europe at the time and had access to some great music that I couldn’t get my hands on without spending some serious scratch. I wasn’t necessarily a fan of the “one sensitive guy and an acoustic guitar” sound but for some reason this one stuck with me. Plus, it was a great mix and came close to wearing it out between 1990 and 1994 or so.
Fast forward to about year or so ago I started a project to make digital versions of the many mix tapes I’ve saved over the years. Tons of the tracks have never been released on digital music services so when my google-fu failed me I resorted to buying the actual discs. In most cases I could snag a disc for a few pennies plus shipping thanks to Amazon.com’s marketplace or a random eBay auction. However, it turns out EP this song is on has become quite the collectors item. There are plenty of discs I’m willing to pay $25 or $30 for but not this one. (Heck, I cringe when I think what I’ve paid for the Japanese version of discs just to get one or two extra tracks and some new artwork.) So I gave up on getting the track any time soon. A few months later I tried the search again and something must have changed in Google’s search index because there were at least a half-dozen copies floating around. While I’d like to add lots of new tracks to the web, in some ways this is just pig-piling of the best kind. (Even if the song is a little fey.)
