I’ve been super-sick the last few days and the Nyquil has kept me from clearly remembering a good Eric B. & Rakim story. I have a vague recollection of a friend of mine from one neighborhood over being the bigger fan of the duo. Every time his tape deck would start it would be Eric B. & Rakim, Big Daddy Kane or Fishbone. (I take credit for introducing him to the latter.) It was always fun driving with him because he was the friendliest guy when you knew him but he loved to drive with the windows down, radio blasting and he scared the heck out of half the neighborhood. “Paid in Full” is the track most folks recall from the day, but I swear this has aged better and shows off Rakim’s verbal dexterity better. It’s also solid that MC 900 Ft. Jesus sampled this at the end of “Killer Inside Me.”
