colourbox.jpegThe fun of listening to the last batch of songs Colourbox made is half about the music, half about identifying the samples they used in their songs. Sampling in the late eighties was still just getting started so hearing stacks of obscure movie samples in with pounding drums and guitars was still very new and very cool. I remember fighting with a high-school pal over the origin of multiple samples from the track “Hot Doggie.” Matching up samples from The Last Starfighter and The Evil Dead was pretty impressive. The brothers behind the band not only made good music, they sounded like great guys to hang out and watch movies with. While “Hot Doggie” is a great example of the guitar and sample-fest that signified their last few tracks, I give a slight edge to the track “Just Give ‘Em Whiskey” for sampling both Westworld AND the Prisoner. Geek heaven.
