Grow on this to take control of your fate

umcs.jpgThe UMC’s Fruits of Nature is a lost hip-hop classic. It’s aged as well as De La Soul’s 3 Feet High and Rising or A Tribe Called Quest’s People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm but nothing clicked for the band the way they did for the Native Tongues Posse. It probably didn’t help that folks might have confused them with the Ultramagnetic MC’s. The UMC’s sound was rooted in idiosyncratic samples, inventive lyrics and great production. Haas G & Kool Kim weren’t the most dynamic MC’s around but they were a lot better than the dreck that got served up that year. (Look back at 1991’s chart toppers… Guy and Hi-Five? Wow that’s putrid.) On top of that, their albums have gone out of print, so I’m thinking a UMC’s revival isn’t coming any time soon. Pity that.
