“Goody Goody” is one of the better breakup songs ever written but only a few artists have really taken advantage of it. The song came out of the big-band swing era and most artists have used it that way - a high-energy track to get people on the floor and let the full band wail away for a few minutes. It took Julie London to peel back a few layers of the song and polish it into something dark and lustrous. Most arrangements favor faster tempos and punchy brass but I swear they negate the emotional core of the song, making it sound too carefree and lighthearted. London’s version is more confident, satisfied and even a tad venomous - the way a kiss-off should be done. Stripping the instruments down to her early signature sound of just a guitar and bass to accompany lets her voice and the lyrics take over and deliver the goods. “Cry Me A River” is her signature song but “Goody Goody” may be one of her best interpretations.
