Mike Ladd’s “How Electricity Really Works” is as much a teaching tool as it is a brilliant bit of wordplay set to music. Do you know one of the many self-proclaimed Slam Poets who walk the streets of your community? Not so much the ones with actual poetic skill but the ones who insist that their liquor and sleep-deprived feverish visions deserve to be shouted from stages of clubs, bars and street corners? The ones who revel in their ’self-imposed’ vows of chastity because most members of the opposite sex find their over-developed sense of self is matched only by their inability to construct a simple sentence that delivers on the promise of the word ‘poetry.’ Hopefully by now you have a picture in your head. These are the poor souls who need to hear this track. Ladd’s delivery is deceptively easy and he starts simply, letting the listener get a foothold before going off into complex references or tangential ideas.
