When their glamour starts to bore you, come on back where you belong

Charlie Walker - Greatest Honky-Tonk HitsCharlie Walker isn’t a big name in country music but sometimes all it takes is one song to leave a legacy. “Pick Me Up Your Way Down” isn’t even Walker’s tune (it was penned by Harlan Howard) but he made it his own. It has all the little things that makes me love sixties-ere Nashville: the echo-laden pedal steel, the heavy reverb on the drums and a touch of fiddle in the background. That extra bit of reverb has always made me laugh because at times you’d think it was the basis of a Jamaican dub track. I’d love to hear someone manage to mix golden era country with a little Lee Scratch Perry… but it probably sounds better as an idea than an actual track.
